Breast Reduction (Male)

Breast reduction surgery can be used to treat a condition in men known as gynaecomastia, more commonly referred to as ‘man boobs.’ Although many patients with this condition may feel extremely self-conscious and different to other men, gynaecomastia actually affects around 15% of men in the UK.

In some male breasts a raised levels of oestrogen is noted, a female hormone that occurs naturally in the male body, but in small quantities. An abnormal growth of breast tissue can be the result of an oestrogen hormone imbalance in the body.

There are other possible causes of gynaecomastia, such as obesity. Weight gain is associated with a drop in testosterone, a male hormone, which also creates a hormonal imbalance in the body, thus promoting the growth of breast tissue. The use of anabolic steroids, a congenital abnormality (birth defect), or even dramatic weight loss can affect the appearance of male breast tissue. Other medications can also be the cause of gynaecomastia. However, in the majority of patients the cause is unknown (idiopathic). Diet and exercise may help where weight and alcohol are an issue, but for some men breast reduction surgery is a possible solution to flatten the breast area. Liposuction can also be a method to treat the lesser forms of gynaecomastia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a male breast reduction procedure take?

Usually, the procedure involves a general anaesthetic and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Local anaesthetic in some patients can also be used. Liposuction is used to remove the fat deposits which ‘sucks’ out the fatty tissue in your chest area. Sometimes, further incisions may be made to surgically remove breast gland tissue and create an aesthetically pleasing outcome.

If you have had this procedure before and are looking for corrective surgery, then you may not require the liposuction aspect at all, and instead need nipple correction or reduction surgery. If this is best suited to you, it will be discussed thoroughly during your consultation.

What are the risks associated with male breast reduction?

All surgery carries with it an inherent risk. These risks will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation, and will change depending on the type of treatment you require. You will also have the opportunity to discuss any worries or anxieties you may have with the doctors. Please be aware that when choosing competent and experienced plastic surgeons such as Mr Juma, and Mr Hayek the risks associated with surgery become minimised.

How much does male breast reduction surgery cost?

If only liposuction is required, the costs are likely to be £5,250, depending on your specific requirements. Nipple reduction or correction surgery performed alone is cheaper. Full costs will be discussed during your initial consultation.

What happens during the initial consultation at New Image Clinic?

Mr Juma and Mr Hayek will undertake a full medical examination and talk to you about your medical history in order to ascertain you suitability for surgery. You will be made to feel comfortable and relaxed, and if you have any anxieties or worries about the procedure, this would be the perfect time to discuss these concerns and have your questions answered in detail.

What is the recovery process associated with male breast reduction?

You should expect some bruising and swelling in your chest area, which may last for a number of weeks. Some elasticated support may be required around your chest for up to 4 weeks following surgery, but this will not be noticeable under your normal clothing. A week to two weeks off work is advisable, in order to allow you to recover fully from the after effects of surgery, and you should avoid any heavy lifting or rigorous exercise for six weeks. Your personal healing process will be assessed at your follow up appointment with Mr Juma and Mr Hayek.
